November is a tough month for me

by on Nov.01, 2017, under Good Eats, Health, Life

No escaping the month of November. It comes along every year, right after all the fun of Halloween night. But November is full of sadness and loss for me. It is going to be tough again this November.

My husband’s birthday was in November. The same date as mine, just three months earlier. So he was three months to the day older than me and he liked to hold that over me head when the subject of age and experience would come up.

We lose daylight saving time in November. Set our clocks back on the first Sunday of the month. Sure, we gain an extra hour of sleep that night. But then every day it gets dark an hour earlier. As the month drags on, it is dark earlier and earlier, to the point that when I leave for work in the morning it is dark, and then when I leave to come home it is dark. There can be days when I don’t see the sun at all. So depressing.

November is also Veteran’s Day, when we thank the people who have served in the military – and their families for their many sacrifices. Some gave limbs. Some gave their peace of mind. And some gave their lives. We must never forget the good men and women who have been there for us to protect our freedoms.

While Thanksgiving has always been a special holiday – the best food put on the table of the entire year! Thanksgiving also means busting your diet, being tempted by all the foods you know you shouldn’t be eating, and the turkey dinner coma that comes after eating so much at dinner.

And, Thanksgiving now is the dreadfully sad reminder every year of my husband being gone. Two days after Thanksgiving, three years ago, he was on his way home from visiting his mom and dad when a drunk driver got on the highway, headed the wrong way, and crashed head on into our car. The one and only comfort I can take from that accident is that he was killed instantly and did not suffer.

I dread the second day after Thanksgiving. Some say I should just note the actual date of the accident. But that was not the point. We went to my parent’s house the day after Thanksgiving for our annual Black Friday shopping. And then the second day after Thanksgiving we always went to my in-laws house to go get their Christmas tree and help them decorate it while munching on the turkey dinner leftovers. So, you see, it is not the date that matters to me. It is the loss of the entire second day tradition and part of our lives that we always looked forward to that has been taken away, along with my husband’s life. And that day every November will always be tough for me.

Wild Kittens

by on Sep.10, 2012, under Good Eats, Health, Life

About two weeks ago this cute little black cat showed up at my back door. I don’t usually see many cats in this neighborhood, and I have two dogs that bark a lot, so I was surprised to see it. It started coming around every night, so I started tossing some food out on the back stoop for it. I don’t really like putting food outside because I don’t want to attract raccoons or skunks, but I only put out a little at night and it was gone pretty quick.

Well, today I got a big surprise when I stepped outside to toss a few scraps from dinner. The black cat was there and so were three tiny little kittens. Oh, joy – more mouths to feed. So I went back in the house and popped open a can of tuna fish so the kittens could have some high protein food that is easy to eat and easy to digest.

I guess that since I started feeding the cat I need to buy some actual cat food at the grocery store next time I go shopping. I have a few cans of tuna on the shelf, but kittens need proper food to develop and tuna isn’t really enough vitamins and minerals for proper nutrition.

Headache from Hell

by on Aug.09, 2012, under Health, Life

Woke up this morning with a huge headache. It was the very first thing I noticed when the alarm went off – my fucking head hurts. IT is a pain on both sides of my head, right about the same level as my eyes. The throbbing did not stop with my coffee, so I’m pretty sure it has nothing to do with lack of caffeine. Might be from lack of sleep, though.

Last time I had a headache this bad, my sister told me it was a migraine. I don’t recall ever having had a migraine before, but she says that she gets them a lot. So if this kind of thing runs in a family, then I guess I am screwed since my sister gets them.

So, if this is going to hurt like hell all day, I’m not going to be able to function. Maybe I should just call out from work and go back to bed.

Shopping

by on Feb.28, 2012, under Health, Life

It has been a few rough weeks at work. We have been slammed constantly and I have worked my ass off, so I went shopping for some relaxation supplies. I went to Bath and Body Works to get everything I needed. Well, everything but my bottle of wine. I bought bath salts, scrubs, loofahs, lotions, and candles. All of the necessary ingredients for a relaxing bubble bath. I am so over due for this. I try to do it every once in a while and realized that I had run out of supplies, hence the shopping trip. I earned it though and do not feel the least bit guilty.

I am going to make dinner, spend some time with the kids and then put them to bed. After that, I am going to fill this fucking garden Jacuzzi tub to the rim almost and submerse myself for at least an hour. I think I will take a nice book with me just in case I feel like reading. I can’t forget my wine either. I have to remember to set everything up before I get in too big of a hurry to get in. I can’t wait till eight thirty gets here.

Cookies!

by on Sep.07, 2011, under Good Eats, Health

Every night I am craving a cookie. This is crazy – so NOT like me! I just get a hungry right before bed that screams: Cookie! I almost never buy cookies at the store – I don’t even walk down that aisle. So when I get this awful craving for a cookie, that means I have to bake them! And you cannot just bake one cookie – you have to bake 4 DOZEN cookies.  Can we say, FAT CITY?
